, dan. the death toll continues to climb with at least 1 american and 11 other hostages reported to have been killed. the algerian military has twice stormed the natural gas facility. but authorities say the situation this morning, is still not resolved. and a number of western workers, including americans, apparently remain hostages. the state department has now confirmed that 58-year-old fred buttaccio of suburban houston, was killed at some point during the attack and subsequent rescue effort. but another american, mark cobb of corpus christi, texas, is now confirmed as safe. cobb was the senior manager at the bp facility algeria. and sent a message saying, i'm alive. the al qaeda-linked group claims the attack on the facility in the african desert, had been planned for some two months. in both assault, the algerian army, using tanks and helicopters, found the terrorists were heavily armed and prepared to fight to the death. one official described the aftermath as carnage. hostages who escaped or were freed, said the terrorists only wanted westerners or americans, and were brutal in t

, i wanted to bring in our white house correspondent, dan lothian. dan, is it all about the timing? is it now or never? is it capitalizing on the emotion of this country or is there something else afoot? >> no i do think it is now or never. the white house sees a sense of urgency here in pushing something forward. when you look back over the past several years, when you had these massive shootings, whether it's in connecticut, whether it's in colorado or elsewhere, there's talk in washington about coming up with guidelines to prevent something like that from happening again. then usually it gets lost in the noise of washington there are other pressing issues that come up. in fact we probably would have been talking about fiscal issues had that shooting not happened. they see this as an opportunity to seize the moment. they believe the president is putting forward a comprehensive plan, but it's controversial. a lot of pushback, not only from gun rights groups but some lawmakers up on capitol hill. >>> if you wouldn't mind we minding viewers. there was a lot of talk about the 19 pote

international correspondent dan rivers. he's in london to to see bring us the latest. good morning. what can you tell us then about the reports of this final assault? >> reporter: well, this is being carried out by algerian state-run television saying that seven further victims have been recovered and 11 militants. now it's really difficult to grasp the total number of hostages that have been killed so far. we're trying to put it together, but they probably include japanese, brits, malasians, possibly some norwegians and other nationalities. it's very difficult to know the final numbers. but adding up what we know it could be up to at least 32 missing and possibly up to 26 confirmed dead, although those numbers have been changing a lot. that gives you a sense of the scale of this anyway. among those, at least one american i'm afraid confirmed dead. six americans confirmed rescued, freed. and those details as i say, we're hoping to try and get more clarification in the coming hours. >> what is being said about this crisis there in britain? >> reporter: well, william hague, the british foreign sec

necessary to protect americans in a harrowing hostage crisis unfolding in algeria. dan rivers is in london to bring us the very latest this morning. dan, good morning to you. algeria is defending a military operation that now has left at least one american and 11 others dead. what can you tell us about that? >> absolutely. this situation is not over yet. i think that is the headline. they're saying they're still pursuing terrorists and some hostages within this sprawling gas plant in the far south of algeria. as you say, the state department has confirmed one death. it's been widely reported he is from texas. the state department not going into further details about how many americans may still be missing. we're waiting for an update from london from the british foreign secretary william hague, chairing an emergency meeting about this. algerian state television is reporting that terrorists were planning to kill all of the hostages and to blow up this plant. so, it could have been a lot worse, had they managed to get through that. in the end algerians went in, freed some 650 people. there a

's plan saying their second amendment rights are under attack. dan lothian is following all these developments in washington. what's the latest? >> the white house sees these recommendations as a way to hopefully curb gun violence and some of these things the president has backed before such as a ban on assault weapons. the president shortly after the connecticut shootings came out in support of that. so that's expected to be in the president's plan. also pressing for a ban on those high capacity magazines with more than ten rounds. that's the important note here. the aim here is to cut down on the ability of a gunman to go in and release up to 30 rounds in a short period of time. in addition, the president will be pushing for universal background checks so that everyone who buys aunder questi goes a criminal or mental health check. in addition the president wants to request funds be available for mental health illnesst to make sure there's money there for those things to be treated and to provide schools with the support they need for enhanced safety. the president is also
